Assoc. Prof Tino Mercado

Tino finished his Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Pathology at the University of Queensland in 1997 and went on to finish his Masters in Dental Science in Periodontics in the same University in 2000. He was involved in the dental undergraduate and periodontal postgraduate training at the University of Queensland and the University of Sydney.
Assoc Prof Mercado currently holds the Associate Professor position at the Periodontal Post-Graduate department at the University of Queensland.
Presently he is involved in the Clinical Mentoring for the Oral Implant Course at the University of Sydney. He is active in research with the majority of his publications involving Periodontal Medicine looking at the link between Periodontal Disease and Diabetes Mellitus and also Rheumatoid Arthritis and treatment alternatives of Peri-implantitis.
He has commenced his PhD training at Griffith University, with developing techniques in regenerating bone on teeth and implants and treatment of peri-implantitis.
He was recently elected as a Fellow of an international dental organisation – The Pierre Fauchard Academy, and he holds an Associate Professor position at the Periodontal Post-Graduate department at the University of Queensland.
Assoc. Prof Mercado recently completed his PhD, his topic and latest publications in peer-reviewed high implant journals are on predictable management of peri-implantitis and management of periodontal recession on teeth and implants using autologous and alternative tissues.
He is twice recipient of the prestigious National and Health Medical Research Council Scholarship (1998 for MDSc and 2011 for PhD) His clinical researcg on maxillary anterior ridge preservation won Best Clinical Research at the Virtual Osteology World Symposium 2020.
He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Australian Society of Periodontology, Australian Osseointegration Society, Australian New Zealand Academy of Periodontists, Asia Pacific Society of Periodontology, International Team of Implantology (ITI), Academy of Laser Dentistry and numerous local and district societies.
He is the NSW Councillor for the Australia and New Zealand Academy of Periodontists and a Periodontal examiner at the Royal Australasian college of Dental Surgeons (RACDS). He is the Director for the Western Sydney and Greater Blue Mountains International Team of Implantology (ITI) Study Club
Area of interest…
He is interested in the management of periodontal diseases and its impact on systemic health, periodontal cosmetic and surgical procedures, particularly Periodontal plastic surgery on teeth and implants. He enjoys living in the Blue Mountains and Sydney.
